Downtown restaurant to close permanently next week

In less than a week, downtown Augusta will lose one of its long-time restaurants.

Eric Kinlaw, the owner of The Bee’s Knees located at 211 10th St., announced on Facebook that the restaurant, which was established in 2002, will close permanently after serving its guests on Sunday, Nov. 20.

“To have observed and been a part of countless interpersonal connections that started here has been the greatest accomplishment for me,” the post said. “But now it’s time to say goodbye.”

ABD spoke to The Bee’s Knees General Manager, John Porter who declined to provide any further information regarding the announcement. Porter said the restaurant plans to host special events to commemorate its last weekend in business. On Saturday, Nov. 19, he said some of their consignment partners will create live paintings at The Bee’s Knees.

“It will pretty much be an all-day event,” Porter said. “On Sunday, some local musicians will play as we serve the last of the inventory we have in stock.”

Many of the restaurant’s loyal customers, such as Tara Scheyer, responded to Kinlaw’s Facebook post by expressing their sadness.

“You have provided such a lovely home and safe place for so many souls over these two decades,” Scheyer said. “Thank you for all you’ve done and all you’ve given of yourself.”

The Bee’s Knees nearly closed due to the pandemic. After being closed for several months, the restaurant re-opened in July with a revamped menu. It now serves a variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as gourmet coffee and teas. The business also sells various retail products, such as vinyl records and CBD oils.

The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the restaurant and its plans to close, visit its Facebook page.
