Faith Friday: Catching them before they fail keeps one tutor’s faith from falling

The excuse, “The dog ate my homework” will not fly with one local educator. After all, that may have been one reason some students find themselves under the tutelage of Heather Denson in the first place.

At N.E.T. (No Excuses Today) Tutorial Service, she requires more because she sees the potential students don’t see in themselves. From her native hometown of Atlanta to Boston to New York to Augusta, she has seen the power of tutoring change lives and GPAs.

“We provide tutoring for all subjects,” Denson said. “I tutor math, but I have other qualified teachers who tutor math, English, reading, social studies, economics, and Spanish. We even tutor for GACE, GMAT, SAT, ACT, and GED.  All ages four and up.

“The mission of my company is to catch them before they fail. I have had so many success stories of people of all ages receiving services and being able to take what they have learned and excel in other areas.”

Indeed, her clients sing her praises. Her website is full of testimonials boasting her customer service, professionalism, and transformative power. It’s a power she says comes directly from God through her faith. She’s been trusting Him with this vision since 2008 when she was one of 100 educators who were laid off from a teaching job at Clark Atlanta University, a Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in Atlanta.

Heather Denson expanded her business in Augusta, where she was called into the Gospel ministry.

“Faith for me is believing in the promises of God,” Denson said. “I may not always see the light, but because I know the promises of God, I know that He is always there and everything will work out for my good no matter what. My business tithes and everyone who works for me believe in the power of Christ. We not only tutor, but we talk to our clients and keep them lifted in prayer. I believe that is why we have so much success with them.”

Denson said when she had to rely solely on tutoring for income, God provided every time. She believes because of her faith, her business has grown and her vision for company growth is getting larger.

She sees her business as a service to assist what the Bible calls “the least of these” because often, she doesn’t charge any fees to those who cannot afford it but need it. She sees the return on her investment.

“My business has actually tripled since I moved to Augusta, the city where I answered my call to ministry,” Denson said. “I have been a licensed minister at Tabernacle Baptist Church since 2018. I put my hands on the plow and I have not looked back. I never thought to relate the growth of business as a correlation to me answering my call, but it is evident. Just like one plus one, equals two.”

NET became a business after Denson was laid off as a teacher

Denson hopes N.E.T. Tutoring Service leaves a lasting impression of not only realizing math and other subjects may not be that hard after all. But also that life, when operated by faith, always works toward the correct answer.

“I am nothing without Him,” she said. “My business is nothing without Him. I am able to minister in so many different ways and my aim is for everyone I encounter to feel the love of Christ.”
