Free Access: A new healthcare player in town

  1. Sorry, but Tom is way over is head on this. First, he says that the market used to have good competition before Piedmont took over UH. So that would then lead one to assume that Piedmont and HCA will no longer compete as hard as Doctors Hospital and UH did in the past. Pure rubbish. Then he talks about Wellstar partnering with AU Health. Obviously this clip was before the release of the Wellstar partnership. It is extremely doubtful that the State of Georgia will be selling any AU assets to Wellstar.

    Finally, hospital cost of care means many things. From a patient without insurance perspective, UH and Doctors Hospital have always been two of the highest charging hospitals in the state. Of course, from a payor perspective, insurance companies don’t care what hospital’s charge, only what they can force them to accept as payment under contract. UH was tough on payors but I will concede his point that Piedmont should be able to leverage a better price from the payors with their 18 hospital network.
