Giant sculptures help businesses make a big first impression

Outside of the clubhouse of The First Tee in Augusta is a colorful tee worthy of a Paul Bunyan-like drive. The one-ton, 30-foot-long sculpture is made of steel and solid foam.

Ed Durant, the former owner of The Frame Shoppe on Walton Way in Augusta, created the concept to give the course its own unique identity. The project took about 14 months to complete and was unveiled in December 2021.

The giant tee sculpture at The First Tee makes a stunning visual impact.

“I went by First Tee, and there was no signage,” Durant said. “They needed an expression of what they do.”

Durant presented the idea to Executive Director, Jill Brown, who loved it. An anonymous donor privately funded the sculpture.

“I had a 3D model produced and gave them the idea,” Durant said.

The giant tee was manufactured in Charleston and painted by local artist, Cole Phail to include the First Tee’s Nine Core Values, such as sportsmanship, courtesy, respect, and confidence. Phail also painted the James Brown mural in downtown Augusta.

Durant said the sculpture has created more excitement for the children than a picture could.

Durant owns Durant-Durant, LLC which specializes in large sculptures for businesses. He’s currently in the process of contacting other First Tee locations throughout the United States about adding the sculpture at those locations. Durant is also discussing future sculpture projects with a school and college, but he said it’s too soon for him to provide details about those projects.

“It’s important for a business to have an impactful presence in the marketplace,” Durant said. “For First Tee-Augusta, the sculpture is bringing awareness to its mission.”

The nonprofit provides golf instruction and life skills training for local students between the ages of 7 and 18.
