Keeping The Promise of CCSD: Great Schools and Great (Business) Communities

Each day, tens of thousands of students enter the doors of the Columbia County School District, each carrying something that belongs uniquely to them: promise.

The promise to learn. The promise to grow. The promise to discover talents they may not yet recognize and opportunities they may not yet imagine.

Our responsibility as a school district, and as a community, is to help unlock that promise.

This year, the Columbia County School District has centered our work around our annual campaign: The Promise. But The Promise is about more than what happens inside a classroom. It represents the collective effort of an entire community committed to giving each student the opportunity to succeed.

The Columbia County School District Foundation provides an important connection between our schools and the greater community. Through the involvement of businesses, community partners, and individuals, the Foundation brings people together in support of our students, educators, and staff.

During American Education Week, November 16-20, the Foundation will co-host Principal for a Day with the Columbia County Chamber Foundation. Community leaders will step into our schools and shadow principals, experiencing firsthand the many moving parts of a school day and gaining a greater understanding of the work required to serve our students.

That experience reflects something important about public education: our schools belong to our community, and their success is a shared responsibility.

Certainly, that begins with our outstanding teachers and school leaders. But they do not do this work alone.

We have two types of employees in the Columbia County School District: those who teach and those who support those who teach. It takes bus drivers who begin their mornings before many of us are awake. It takes school nutrition employees, custodians, and the vast array of personnel who ultimately support the work happening in the classroom each day. It takes all of us to keep students safe, healthy, and ready to learn. And it takes families reinforcing learning at home, volunteering in our schools, and partnering with teachers and administrators.

It also takes a business community that recognizes that strong public schools and a strong local economy go hand in hand.

Columbia County businesses contribute as school partners, Foundation supporters, advisors, and volunteers. Their involvement represents something larger than support for our schools. It represents an investment in Columbia County’s future workforce, a stronger community, a thriving Georgia, and ultimately, a stronger nation.

We often say that great schools help build great communities. In Columbia County, we recognize the other half of that equation: great communities help build great schools.

So, as we celebrate American Education Week, the CCSD extends its thanks to our employees, families, business partners, Foundation supporters, volunteers, and community leaders for showing up for our students.

Each student has promise. Keeping the Promise takes all of us.
