Burt Sappenfield has never served in the military, but every year, he helps to warm the hands and hearts of U.S. servicemembers all over the world.
In 2009, Sappenfield, owner of Majestic Floor Care, established the Operation Handwarmer initiative, which has collected more than 150,000 items, including not only hand warmers but also toothpaste, nuts, protein bars, candy, and gloves, to ship to U.S. Army troops stationed overseas.
“We work with chaplains, and they take them to the troops,” he said.
Unlike other charities, Operation Handwarmer doesn’t accept monetary donations because Sappenfield doesn’t want people to question how the money is used.
“Sometimes money ruins a good cause,” he said.

Each year, in November and early December, local residents drop off items at CSRA businesses, such as Century 21 Larry Miller Realty and Kelly Lawrence State Farm.
“Larry Miller has been instrumental,” Sappenfield said.
Miller, a former U.S. Army Military Police Captain, helps to collect items every year.
“It’s easy for everyone to participate,” he said. “These men and women are putting everything on the line for our country, so the least we can do is show them we care in a tangible, meaningful way.”
In mid-December, Operation Handwarmer hosts a packing party. This year’s party will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 8:30-10 a.m. at the American Legion in Evans. The next day, Sappenfield will take the items to Savannah, where they will be loaded on military planes.
These items will be delivered to 72 countries around the world, many of which are in Europe. Because the charity works with special operations, he can’t specifically name any of the countries.
“Some of the countries are torn apart; they’re in bitter, hostile environments,” he said. “When they (the troops) get items, it warms their hearts.”
Sappenfield said supporting the troops also helps donors, especially in a time of political strife and staggering inflation.
“People want to do something they can feel good about,” he said.
Sappenfield’s inspiration for starting the initiative came from Proverbs 3:27: “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is within your power to act.”
Long before he established Operation Handwarmer, he began helping the troops.
“I’ve been involved in helping the military since 1991,” Sappenfield said.
That year, he personally delivered care packages to troops stationed in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. While owning and operating a business takes up much of his time, he loves serving others.
“It’s a passion I have; I enjoy it,” Sappenfield said. “Since I’ve never served, it’s my way of giving back.”
