Local company celebrates 50th Anniversary by demolishing buildings

When Thompson Building Wrecking Company Inc. was founded in Augusta, John F. Kennedy was president of the United States.

Located at 631 11th St., the family-owned business offers a variety of services for both residential and commercial customers, including demolition, asbestos testing and removal, and roll-off container rentals. “We have a recycling yard also,” which is located in Beech Island, says Susan Juker, Thompson’s roll-off/office manager. That facility recycles concrete and asphalt. The company’s roll-off containers are available for short-term and long-term use at residential and commercial construction sites. Their demolition projects have included the Aiken Mall, the Augusta-Richmond County Law Enforcement Center located at 401 Walton Way in downtown Augusta, and the Savannah Convention Center. “We work at Fort Gordon a lot also,” Juker states.

She has been with the company for four years and enjoys the daily challenges her job provides. While COVID-19 has profoundly affected many local businesses, Juker explains that hasn’t been the case for Thompson. “We have not slowed down,” she says. “We’ve had a lot of business this year, and we get a lot of referral work.” Juker states they receive many calls from people who have seen Thompson at various job sites. Prices vary by job, and the company provides free estimates. Edward G. Thompson started the business in 1961, and three generations of the Thompson family have owned and operated it over the last 50 years. Thompson’s son, Hiram, and grandsons, Marcus and Tyson, currently run the business. In that time, Juker explains the company has developed a solid reputation in the local community and beyond. “I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from people who say Thompson is the best in the area as far as demolition goes,” she adds.
