Savannah River Nuclear Solutions
Even more jobs are heading to the CSRA over the next five years with the announcement that the Savannah River Site (SRS) will be one of two U.S. locations for plutonium pits, a critical component in nuclear weapons.
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and the Augusta Building and Construction Trades Council signed an agreement last week for the building of the plutonium processing facility at SRS. The project is expected to require about 2,500 workers, including skilled trade and craft positions such as construction workers, electricians, and plumbers.
Construction is expected to start before the end of the year and continue until around 2030. It is part of the United States’ long-term efforts to stockpile nuclear weapons. The other facility working on the plutonium project will be in Los Alamos, N.M.
