You might not know this, but a single loaf of bread is taxed seven times and goes over 13 scales before you pick it up at your local grocery store. Products are sold by net weight, thus, the weighing process. Not only that, but the trucks that transport the food are weighed.
As the Business Manager for Scale South for the past 10 years, one gets the feeling Stacy could write a book about how the scale business works. She knows the history of the business from ancient balance scales to platform scales to the modern-day digital weighing scales.
“I hold a scale license and can troubleshoot minor challenges. Our technicians know that I know what I’m doing. Sometimes, I even get calls in the middle of the night,” Stacy explained.
Those calls can come from any number of Scale South customers from International Paper, Bridgestone, Boeing, FedEx, UPS, Old Dominion, or medical clients and recyclers. Apparently, scales aren’t just for making sure you stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
“I love what I do. It’s fascinating and what we do could be critical, for example, the scales used for dialysis could be a matter of life or death. So, it’s not only methods used for a company, but for the end user, which is all of us as consumers.”
What began as a family-owned business in 1974, Augusta Scale Company, has expanded over the years across Georgia and South Carolina as Scale South. With a commitment to quality service and products, the company became a division of Southern Industrial Scales, LLC in 2019 in hopes of branching out to even more southern territories in the future.
Scale South President, Scott McKillip wanted to recognize Stacy in appreciation for all her hard work and said, “You are more than an office manager, you have helped manage a business that has expanded our customer base.”
Stacy loves what she does, but like many business executives, her greatest struggle is the work/life balance. Fortunately, her husband also works for Scale South, so they ride to work together and often listen to sermons and talk about anything besides work.
“Even if I get anxious about work, I know God will take care of it. Thanks to the Lord, I’ve never had a bad day in my life (my husband’s mantra). Every day is a gift and part of the gift is what I do for Scale South.”
Stacy has her favorite Bible verse posted at home and in her office:
“Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds.”– Philippians 4 verses 6 and 7.
