
Stanley Donen: The South Carolinian who changed movie musicals
April 13th marked what would have been the 100th birthday of one of the most under-appreciated maestros of American movies, Stanley Donen. Though his name is not as immediately recognized among the masses compared to the likes of his contemporaries, he is synonymous with an entire genre of film – where Alfred Hitchcock was a thriller and Frank Capra was the American dream, Donen, for a while, was the movie musical. Born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1924, Donen fell in love with movies at age 9, watching Fred Astaire
