Coach Darin: Make your business life easier!

Editor’s Note: Augusta Business Daily would not make deadline without “shortcuts” like Google Drive or Dropbox. When I ran Buzz on Biz, we literally ran all communications on stories, photos, and updates via email or text!  Things are simpler now. Here are (3) excellent tips from Darin Myers, my coach at TAB CSRA! Ironically, technology enables us to get our work done anywhere and become more productive, but also takes us down many time-wasting activities and paths. When we are on our devices, it is easy to get sidetracked and

Local company celebrates 50th Anniversary by demolishing buildings

When Thompson Building Wrecking Company Inc. was founded in Augusta, John F. Kennedy was president of the United States. Located at 631 11th St., the family-owned business offers a variety of services for both residential and commercial customers, including demolition, asbestos testing and removal, and roll-off container rentals. “We have a recycling yard also,” which is located in Beech Island, says Susan Juker, Thompson’s roll-off/office manager. That facility recycles concrete and asphalt. The company’s roll-off containers are available for short-term and long-term use at residential and commercial construction sites. Their

Pandemic derails start-up restaurant in Evans

Shemp and Petey’s restaurant on Washington Road opened in the summer and didn’t make it to fall—closing on August 28th. The restaurant offered up unique sandwiches and homemade pasta dishes with a local flair. The restaurant took over for a pair of eateries that closed in the same spot such as The Garlic Clove and J.T Yesterday’s. “Sorry everyone, we tried to stay open, but we got hit pretty hard starting off and were not able to overcome it,” wrote one of the co-owners announcing the close on their Facebook

Dave & Buster’s breaks ground on new Augusta location

Many local residents have wondered if Dave & Buster’s was coming to Augusta. ABD has learned the company has broken ground in the Village at Riverwatch, which also contains Cabela’s, Costco Wholesale, and Riverwatch Cinemas. A representative from Jordan Trotter Commercial Real Estate, which sold the property, has confirmed Dave & Buster’s is currently clearing their land to build a new indoor entertainment complex, sports bar, and restaurant adjacent to Top Golf. (see photo above by Melissa Gordon) She doesn’t have a specific timeline for construction and opening of the

The Gift of Time

Confession: One of my biggest pet peeves is being late. I recently participated in an icebreaker with a leadership group, and my fun fact was my disdain for tardiness. When explaining my reason, I told my group, “Every second you live, you are closer to dying, and you never know when that moment will come. So, just don’t waste time.” Extreme, I know. We laughed collectively about my rigidness, and now my leadership group jokes to not be late or “you know who” will get mad. Although I know it

Coach Darin: Use your time wisely!

Editor’s Note: I was in a business networking meeting recently in Augusta when the subject of time management came up. An owner of a service company mentioned that his technicians and his clients ALL ask for him when they have an issue! It was suggested that he consider blocking out a few hours with the door shut to plan, think and work “on the business” instead of “in the business”. Is that you? It’s too bad there are only 24 hours in a day. Think what you could get accomplished

Johnson Motor Company “cashed out” of its franchise deal with Cadillac

ABD has learned Johnson Motor Company of Georgia received a settlement from the Cadillac corporation to end its’ franchise agreement in late July while still in effect. Johnson was located at 1122 Walton Way in downtown Augusta and closed after nearly 86 years in the automotive sales and service business. Owners of the dealership, which opened in 1936 on Telfair Street, chose to close to avoid investing up to $200,000, which would be needed to meet Cadillac’s standards for selling and servicing electric cars. Part of that investment would cover

How we can help the CSRA hospitality industry in need

Editor’s Note: This story was first published on May 27th. With the emergence of the Delta Variant, not a lot has changed for the hospitality industry in the CSRA. On Tuesday morning the Starbucks Coffee Shop on Washington Road at I-20 CLOSED because there was not enough staff to service guests. They re-opened Wednesday morning after locating workers. On the same day, one of the Gary’s Hamburgers had to close at 3 pm—the stories go on and on.  As part of our weekly strategic alliance with AU’s Hull College of
