And we’re off to the racing movies!

“If you ain’t been throwed, you ain’t rode,” John Steinbeck told the young playwright, Terrence McNally, the latter downtrodden after an unsuccessful staging of his first play. The language of horse-riding and racing seems embedded in the verbiage of American daily life; “get off your high horse,” “across the board,” “jockeying for position,” and “Dark Horse.” This Saturday, the poetry of racing will echo throughout South Louisville and into Churchill Downs for the 150th time: The Kentucky Derby will begin. In between reading the odds and betting guides, looking ahead

Stanley Donen: The South Carolinian who changed movie musicals

April 13th marked what would have been the 100th birthday of one of the most under-appreciated maestros of American movies, Stanley Donen. Though his name is not as immediately recognized among the masses compared to the likes of his contemporaries, he is synonymous with an entire genre of film – where Alfred Hitchcock was a thriller and Frank Capra was the American dream, Donen, for a while, was the movie musical. Born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1924, Donen fell in love with movies at age 9, watching Fred Astaire

Civil War: A Satire with Nothing to Say

The readout of the period in which we, Americans, currently coexist among the press and historians is a resounding “turbulent.” As citizens, we’re constantly being fed fear about our friends and neighbors, the political machine, and the future of Democracy. The worst prospect pushed is that of a second civil war. Writer and Director, Alex Garland, apparently recognized this and chose to exploit it in his new movie, aptly titled, Civil War. However, like the insidious deflections and projections by those holding legitimate power in our nation who would rather

Four golf movies to celebrate the Masters

It’s a tradition that adds to the list of reasons why Augusta is often on the map, and, naturally, is the biggest buzz in the city today. The game of golf is not as widely exploited in the movies as much as baseball, football, or other national pastimes, but it has been both the subject and story-driver of a handful of beloved films. While most tee-time fanatics will be watching the back-to-back

Georgia film tax credit survives legislative review

The Georgia Legislature passed hundreds of bills, both statewide items and those addressing local concerns, in the just-ended 2024 legislative session and sent them to Gov. Brian Kemp (R) for his signature. House Bill 1180 was not among them which is good news for movie-making in Georgia. The bill would have revised one of the state’s most popular tax credit incentives, the one available to filmmakers to entice them to film productions in the Peach State. Productions are eligible for a tax break of up to 30%. Randy Davidson, Founder

My Masters Journey: Changing Perspectives, Greater Appreciation

It has been thirty-five years since I attended my first Masters in 1989. Including the 1989 Masters, I have now attended at least one practice or tournament round of nine Masters, including five since I have resided here in Augusta. Although I was in awe the first time I stepped onto the Augusta National Golf Club, through these thirty-five years I have gained an even greater appreciation for how Augusta National conducts its tournament, its business, and itself as I have been able to observe things from a closer vantage
