Lower food prices coming to South Augusta

If you’ve been grocery shopping lately, you’ve probably experienced sticker shock after seeing the prices of meat, milk, cereal, and other staples. To save money, many families now shop at Aldi, an international grocery store chain that plans to build its fifth CSRA location in South Augusta.

The new Aldi store will be located next to Wells Fargo at 3121 Peach Orchard Road, the former site of University Health’s South Richmond County Campus. It will be replaced with the 20,000-square-foot store.

“Demolition has begun, and we hope to open in fall 2022,” said Bobby Ochs, the company’s Director of Real Estate.

Plans are in place to build an Aldi in south Augusta.

The company has locations in Augusta, Grovetown, North Augusta, and Aiken. South Augusta has many food deserts, and this new location will give residents in that area, access to another grocery store option.

The company is known for having lower prices than other big-box chains. A February, 2022 article from Business Insider, compared prices at both Aldi and Walmart. While Walmart had a much wider selection of products, Aldi’s prices were lower for most items, particularly meat and produce.

Jordan Trotter Commercial Real Estate handled the transaction.

Founded in Germany in 1961, Aldi has more than 2,000 stores in 36 states. The first U.S. store was built in Iowa in 1976.
