Publix to open second store in Aiken

For those who believe that customer-focused Publix is the Chick-fil-A of grocery stores, you’ll be happy to know the chain is opening a second store in Aiken. It will be located at Silver Bluff Road and Village Green Boulevard. The store will employ about 140 people and is slated to offer almost 47,000 square feet of groceries and pharmacy items. The new Publix is projected to open in 2025 and will join another store in Aiken in the Eastgate Shopping Center. Apparently, social media followers are excited, as more than

A Special Place

I had planned to share something else with you this week. That is until hearing of the war in Israel. My love for Israel started decades ago. I was fortunate to grow up in a home that attended church regularly. I still have my first Bible; one my folks gave me for my eighth birthday. Faith has percolated in my heart since an early age. I remember looking in the very back of a Bible and seeing maps of Israel. A seed found a place to grow early in my

Expo Preview: 70 years in the CSRA makes WJBF a community favorite

In November, WJBF Channel 6 will be celebrating its 70th anniversary. All of those years of broadcasting local news, sports, and weather have made the station a favorite in the CSRA. “There’s a direct correlation to how long the station has been around and how people have an affinity for our anchors and talent,” said Cherish Geter, director of sales for WJBF. “A lot of our anchors have been around for decades, they have their own shows, and that translates into ratings.” As a result, Geter said WJBF is the

AFFORDABLY priced new construction options in the CSRA

Happy Friday the 13th to you! After last week’s spooky market report, I thought you may want to know where you could buy a new home and stay within a universally affordable price range. A little treat after the last mind trick. First, why focus on new construction? That answer is simple, when a buyer is looking at homes, they will 9 out of 10 times choose a new home over a resale. In today’s market, mortgage payments are highly affected, so the burden of unexpected expenses weighs on the

Committee talks on recommendations for Georgia’s dual enrollment program

Members of the Joint Study Committee on Dual Enrollment for Highly Skilled Talent at Young Ages met on Oct. 11 to discuss final recommendations. Dual enrollment is a pathway for students in high school to jumpstart their post-secondary education, generally at one of Georgia’s technical colleges. Currently, under HB 444 passed in 2020, dual enrollment targets high school juniors and seniors who are allowed to take core and career and technology education (CTE) courses. High school sophomores can also participate, but are limited to CTE courses. Prior to 2020, freshmen

Local caterer delivers food with LOL

She grew up in a big family who all had a passion for cooking. At the age of 13, she was helping her grandma cook for various community centers around Augusta. It’s not surprising that Tashia Bailey started a catering business. “Through the years, I also worked in nearly every school cafeteria in Richmond County,” she said. “I’ve also worked at most of the area fast food places and for a while, as the bakery manager at Walmart,” said Bailey. When the pandemic hit, restaurants had to juggle and find

The O$car $ea$on

As we near the end of the year, Hollywood studios are preparing to roll out their newest flock of contenders for the 2024 Awards Season. The period between October and January is, historically, the most bloated (and frantic) time for new movie releases, as companies cram to vie for decorations and publicity in the winter. This period is called “Oscar Season.” There are many – too many – award shows nowadays; hosted by guilds, artistic foundations, academies, critics, and whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is. Let’s face it, the

Coach Darin: 5 ways to build a green workplace

It’s one thing to say you want to lead a “green” business. Making sure your workplace adheres to eco-friendly standards to achieve that goal can be another thing entirely. These same leaders may not always recognize that building a green workplace is part and parcel of the entire organizational strategy. The benefits of going green in the workplace are tangible. “Businesses might enjoy tax breaks that come with
