The Little Things

Is it just me, or… The Little Things Note: The following is what happens when a lifetime of a certain kind of work causes you to notice things that fail to grab the attention of almost everyone else. Every day we’re surrounded by marketing phenomena we ignore, fail to question or don’t believe applies to us. Let’s dive into a couple of them. Telegram-speak on supermarket self-checkout pinpads Since we’ve raised at least two generations since the age of the telegram, I should quickly explain that to send one was

“Oh No, Not Again!”

Is it just me, or… “Oh No, Not Again!” “If I see that Kohl’s commercial one more time, I’m going to scream,” she said from a far-away city last November. I had no idea what she was talking about. Clearly the Kohl’s marketing algorithm had found her and her favorite platforms, while the same software knew there wasn’t much gold to be found from me and my channels. The question is, what’s the sweet spot of an effective video/commercial performance life before it loses its power to persuade? Remember when

What Your Ad People Are Thinking

Is it just me, or… What Your Ad People Are Thinking Every business has that bit of sausage-making going on behind the scenes they’d rather you not see. This’ll sting a bit to hear, but in marketing it’s mostly what’s whispered about you, your business and how they can wrestle you both to the finish line. There’s a push-pull dynamic in play here, and it’s worth examining. You, the decision maker feel justifiably exceptional because you stepped out from the crowd and built something out of nothing. You gaze

Marketing and Your Brain

Don MacNeil is the former Marketing Director of Windsor Jewelers and long-time on-air radio professional.   Is it just me, or… Marketing and Your Brain Don’t you hate it when something you took as gospel for a lifetime turns out not to be true? Who knew that the old chestnut of right-brain, (creative) left-brain (accountant type with pocket protector) had been discredited in this century? There just seem to be folks among us determined to take the fun out of everything. And it was such a comforting theory, too.

Naming Yourself

Don MacNeil is the former Marketing Director of Windsor Jewelers and long-time on-air radio professional.   Is it just me, or… Naming Yourself It always amuses me that when someone or something changes its mind we’re all supposed to salute and go along with it, but in truth a lot of us don’t. This especially applies to when companies rename themselves, and recently we’ve been hit with a couple of major examples. Mark Zuckerberg wants to win the race to a so-called metaverse, so now he’s asking us to

Defeating Non-Attention

Don MacNeil is the former Marketing Director of Windsor Jewelers and long-time on-air radio professional.   Is it just me, or… Defeating Non-Attention Marketing lore has it that esteemed advertising smart guy Ron Marshall once ran a crazy experiment to find out how many ads he was exposed to during a typical day. He decided to spot as many commercials as possible and tabulate them in a 24-hour period. By lunch he was at 487 and, amazed, decided not to continue. Volumes have been written decrying the daily onslaught

The Heart of Mentoring

Don MacNeil is the former Marketing Director of Windsor Jewelers and long-time on-air radio professional.   Is it just me, or… The Heart of Mentoring This time I’d like to crystallize a thought you’ve probably had too, but perhaps never fully realized. It’s the thing that lies at the heart of mentoring…the priceless gift of permission. Permission? Permission…to cross over into the extraordinary in whatever you do. If you come away from this chat with my point taken to heart, it can do wonderful things for your marketing. So

Augusta business owner to help promote local businesses

A local printing and graphic design company has found a way to give back to the community and help CSRA businesses. The Graphix Resource, Inc. has developed three holiday promotions. The company will provide 250 free business cards for businesses that have their own card design. Businesses without a design can buy 250 cards for $14, says Brad Kirkland, Graphix Resource’s Chief Executive Officer. Kirkland is also currently looking for local business owners interested in giving away $100 gift cards as a way to promote their businesses. In previous years,
