Faith Friday: Handy and Helpful?

When the cellular telephone was introduced, it was quite an expensive novelty. I remember the first portable phone I ever used. A friend had one installed for work in his car and let me make a call. It seemed like science fiction had somehow become reality. Fast forward to the present when it’s difficult to imagine a world free of these amazing handheld computers. Along with the convenience of these gadgets comes the caution that it is supposed to be a tool for us, not our master. Many never let their phones

Believe and See

We do ourselves a disservice if we say we cannot see God, so we will not believe in him. We choose to believe in things we cannot see all the time. When I buy a can of soup at the store, I believe when I get home and open the can, the soup will come out. When I start my car, I believe the gas in the tank I do not see will find its way to the engine and produce power. I turn on a flashlight and (if the

Walking for Water

A good brisk walk is always a good idea. A walk that has a major impact on the lives of others is even better. People throughout the CSRA are getting ready for the fifth annual CSRA Walk for Water on Nov. 18, beginning and ending at SRP Park in North Augusta (the home of the GreenJackets baseball team). There are several walks in the area throughout the year that support important causes. This one is a bit unique, as you will soon discover. The global water crisis impacts a full

From bargains to blessings

When does a bargain become a blessing? I sought the answer to that question with my visit to Harlem. There, I met with Loreen Reynolds (president) and Stephaney Crenshaw (vice president) of the board of the non-profit Attic Treasures thrift store. Both have volunteered for many years and are having a wide-ranging positive impact in Harlem and neighboring communities. In 2008, the thrift store in town was about to close its doors. Five local folks decided to step in and rent more space. Their goal was to create a thrift

Walking by Faith

A life of long obedience in the same direction means that we keep walking down the straight and narrow even when the path seems long and difficult, and we’d rather take a shortcut. Dorothy Spaulding and her team at Watchmen Broadcasting in North Augusta have been walking a path of obedience since they began broadcasting through TV 49. Their headquarters is in North Augusta, but their reach goes far beyond the CSRA. Each weekday, their flagship talk program “Club 36” brings in local, national, and international guests. Current events are discussed with

50 years later

On a steamy Friday evening in June of 1973, several thousand people gathered for a high school graduation ceremony at Wharton Field House in Moline, Illinois. Almost 900 of them were my classmates, gathered to celebrate the culmination of our high school careers and receive our coveted diplomas. A few weeks ago, I joined a couple of hundred visibly older (and some wiser) former classmates for our 50th class reunion in Moline. I visit my hometown about once a year to see my family, so I don’t go there very

Embrace the Boom

Bill Jordan is a radio guy. He has entertained and informed thousands of people and has some important thoughts about making the most of our one and only life, especially life after our day-to-day working careers end. Before Bill tells us how to “Embrace the Boom,” I want to help you get to know him a bit better. Born and raised in Newport News, Va., Bill attended college for one year at the University of Richmond. His older brother told him he “might” like to get involved in the campus

Change brings Hope

Many of us have no idea where our lives are headed when we are twelve years old. Nick Carnes is an exception. Carnes is the pastor of Hope Church in Augusta (formerly New Passion Church). I sat down with him recently to hear about his life and the changes happening with the church he leads. Pastor Carnes grew up in the Augusta area as the son of a pastor. Two of his uncles were also pastors in the Nazarene church. While he was in grade school, he was part of

Faith Friday: Unoffendable (Part 2)

Last week, we began our conversation with Brant Hansen about his book “Unoffendable.” It focuses on anger and forgiveness and is truly relevant to us all. If you missed the first part of our conversation, I would encourage you to go back and read that, then return here for part two. If you were going to boil the message of your book Unoffendable into a sentence or two, what would that message be? Forgiveness is the best way to live. It’s the healthiest way to live and it’s freedom! How

Faith Friday: Unoffendable (Part 1)

Brant Hansen is a syndicated radio host and podcaster heard by millions of people each week around the country. In 2015, he became an author and has since released four books. “Unoffendable,” our focus today, has been updated and re-released this year, along with some extremely helpful resources to foster more conversation about this important topic. There is so much useful content from this conversation that I’ll be sharing it with you in two parts. Let’s get started: Brant, you are a broadcaster. Was it ever one of your goals
